Community Commons

The Center for Applied Research and Environmental Systems (CARES) and Community Initiatives (CI) created the Community Commons (CC) as a labor of love.

Local and national leaders within the broad healthy, equitable and sustainable communities movement expressed a desire to connect with one another and to access meaningful data about our overall health and well-being.

Community Commons is now a powerful public good platform with an extraordinary array of social, demographic, education, economic, health, transportation and environmental data that can be mapped and placed in digestible reports. The Commons is not just a data and visualization platform, it is a place for change makers to come together, collaborate, share perspectives and support each other in their efforts to make a difference in their community.

The Commons is offered as a gift to the movement. CARES has generously offered its considerable database and mapping and programming expertise. CI provided early financial and in-kind investments to help launch CC.

Community Initiatives continues to support the Commons in a variety of ways. CI volunteers on the board, and helps guide strategy and partnership development. Team members also help lead curation: supporting the development of stories, guest voices and creating opportunities for engagement.

In addition, CI is working with networks and collaboratives who want to leverage the Commons capabilities to advance their specific efforts. CI is helping them to develop a custom space— Hubs for uploading and sharing their own data, strategizing and managing collaboration.

Institute for People, Place and Possibility (IP3) is the not for profit that acts as host and steward of the Community Commons.
